From Skeptic to Advocate – 21 Day Fix

I started my journey with 21 Day Fix 6 weeks ago. When I started, I had originally picked it up because my Hubby was interested. I’d heard about it but didn’t think it would be something I’d enjoy. We set a date to start it and I thought he’d be joining me in our home gym to get the workouts done. He didn’t join me. Not for a single one. He did join in for the meal plan, but not the workouts. *sad face* That first week, I was skeptical. I wasn’t sure I liked the workout routines and figured I’d just push through the 21 days then go back to something else. But as the week went on, I really started to enjoy the workouts. They grew on me. After that first 3 weeks, that first round, following the healthy eating plan and the workouts, I lost a total of 3 inches all over my body and for the first time in forever I saw the start of ABS! That’s amazing for me considering I’ve carried and delivered 4 children. My goal was to lose the last of the stubborn baby weight from my youngest, who turned 2 a few months ago. I decided to do a 2nd round to see how much more of a change I could see…

21 Day Fix is exactly what the name suggests… 21 days of exercise and clean eating. The workouts are set to confuse your muscles to help prevent the dreaded workout plateau. There is a good mix of cardio, upper body, lower body, Pilates, yoga and total body workouts.

With a different workout every day your muscles don’t create muscle memory and just get used to the workouts. They are challenged each and every day in different ways. With weights, without weights, and 30-60 second reps for each exercise you can definitely customize your intensity.

When I started 6 weeks ago I was using 5 lb weights for my light weight (if anything at all) and 7 lb weights for my heavy weights. I have moved up to the 7 lb weight being my light, and for some exercises I could probably bump that up to 8 lbs. My Heavy is staying steady at 10 lbs, but a few I could definitely move that up to 12 lbs and will later this week when I get to them.

Day 1 is Total Body Cardio Fix. Think cardio with weights to really challenge you. I tend to use an 8 lb medicine ball for most of these instead of a dumbbell just because the weight is distributed a bit better for me and challenges me in an entirely different way.

Day 2 is Upper Body Fix. Working out the arms and abs, with the light and heavy weights. There are curls, lifts and raises to challenge and sculpt the triceps, biceps, lats, abs and deltoids. The entire upper body is given a workout here.

Day 3 is Lower Body Fix. The ever dreaded leg day! Still using a set of light and a set of heavy weights the focus shifts to the metabolism power house – the legs and booty! Who doesn’t love a round booty? Or those sexy legs in a nice pair of shorts or skirt? Yea, this is the day to help with that!

Day 4 is an active recovery day with Pilates. Think stretching and strength training using only your body. The reps are set up different than other days, not focusing solely on 2-4 rounds of 2-5 exercises, instead this is more a fluid day of exercises that last for 30-60 seconds each, but aren’t necessarily repeated. Instead they are structured to keep you moving the entire time and stretching and strengthening those muscles you’ve been working on.

Day 5 returns to cardio with Cardio Fix, but there are no weights this day. Instead you are using your body and MOVING. You’ll be drenched in sweat and make the fat cry with this routine.

Day 6 is Dirty 30. We’re back to the weights and intervals. Another sweaty day, but in oh such a good way. This one helps focus on the entire body and gives a great workout.

Day 7 is another active recovery day with Yoga. This one is similar to Pilates in that the moves aren’t necessarily repeated like the other days, and is constant move and flow, but at a gentler pace. It is about restoring balance and renewing yourself to start all over again with Day 1.

So, 7 days of a routine of workouts. There is also a 10 Minute Fix for Abs that is 2 rounds of 5 minutes and definitely works your abs – upper, lower, obliques and even the back. There are 2 other workouts that you can do along with it – Barre Legs and Flat Abs Fix but I don’t have those so have not tried them to comment on them. Perhaps something I will get picked up in the future to try out. 🙂

I think the largest contributor to my success with the program has been following the eating plan. It is designed around portion control and eating healthy, clean, and natural foods, cutting out processed foods as often as you can. Lean proteins, minimal carbs, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, not a lot of dairy. There are a few exceptions, but that is the gist of it. Things your body can more easily process and use to fuel itself on its journey to change, sculpt, tone and trim down. And it works!

21 Day Fix – Day 21

Day 21! Three weeks completed! I made it. I came out the end stronger, more trim, more fit, and a good bit healthier! Such a wonderful feeling. 🙂 A wonderful accomplishment, that I plan to start over tomorrow! I hope to come out even stronger, even healthier, even more fit than I am today!

This Chapter ends with Yoga Fix. A wonderful and peaceful stretch where I felt improved flexibility. I very nice way to end the 3rd week. I still think this is one of my favorite Yoga routines ever. It flows and weaves and wends about very nicely.

Okay, so. After 3 weeks, I think this really is a good program and has enough modifications and challenges it will work for just about every fitness level. And if you follow the meal plan, honestly and truly, you can see results. I have lost 2.5 lbs since I started the program (though I wasn’t in it to lose weight at all), and I have lost a total of 3 inches. Again, I wasn’t trying to lose much in the way of inches, but I did lose them where I was aiming to lose them. So it is progress and great success in my book!

I will continue this journey to see where it takes me. And I’ll continue to share it here. With each and every one of you. Especially as I hope to help motivate and encourage you to get up, get active, get fit, and find your happy as well!

21 Day Fix – Day 20

Day 20 and my workout was Dirty 30. It is another total body workout, but today included weights. I maintained my goal of 10 lbs being my heavy weights and 7 lbs being the light weights. On the 2nd round of tricep kickbacks my arms were screaming at me and hating me a bit, but I got it done. My goal at the beginning was to end with 7s and 10s and I did it! In 3 weeks! I think that is truly amazing.

Another wonderful thing about my workout today was that I got my eldest to join me in working out. He’s been asking for workouts that focus on the arms and abs – total 13 year old boy focus, right? Well I knew today would have weights so I went and convinced him to join me. I swear working out with him is a riot because he keeps a running commentary going. I am not sure if his mouth works more than the rest of him during the workouts. Though it’s not really a BAD thing. He had me in stitches. Especially when we got to the sumo squats with row. He starts saying he’s a monkey and making monkey noises with every dip and row. I couldn’t keep from laughing, despite trying. I really did try not to laugh and encourage him, but in the end I had to give in to the laughter.

By the time we hit the 20 minute mark he started making noise about being done. With 8 minutes to go he really did try to quit. I told him there were 8 minutes left he couldn’t quit now. Despite saying he was going to quit, he finished with me, and finished strong. He even stayed for the cool down despite not being interested. I told him it was a vital part of the workout, so he stuck it out as well. He might not have held form perfectly, but he had fun and he did work. And he even managed to stick with 12 lb weights for almost everything, only lowering to 8 lb weights for a couple of exercises. For a kid who prefers to lift his X-box controller as often as going outside to play, I’m really rather proud of him.

Today wasn’t just getting my workout done. It was spending time with my eldest son while also getting him to get u and be fit and active. Gifts to both of us all around I think. A good bit of bonding if you ask me!

Have you gotten out there and gotten active today? Do you plan to get out there tomorrow and be fit? Don’t let the weekend be your excuse to sit back, remember that even on the weekends you need to feed your body and do something! You can do it!

21 Day Fix – Day 19

It’s hard to believe that I started this current fitness journey almost 3 weeks ago. I mean, seriously. Day 21 is SUNDAY! That is amazing to me. I feel stronger and can do so much more than I was just 3 weeks ago. It is a wonderful feeling. It let’s me know that things are working. That the program really does work as advertised. I love that I can be a Coach for Beachbody and try out these products when I am unsure of them, and see results. I was a bit of a doubter for myself when I started 21 Day Fix. I am a believer now.

That leads to my workout today. Today was Cardio Fix. When I did this one for the first time, I was ready to quit when I hit the “bonus” round. Today, while the bonus round wasn’t super fun, I didn’t quit and wasn’t as winded and doubting when i got to it.

I am enjoying this Chapter of my Fitness journey. It is trying and testing me and pushing me to be better with my nutrition and my fitness than I’ve been in the past. Pushing myself further and finding new limits. It is a wonderful thing!

Have you gotten out and been active today? What are you doing to find the happier, healthier, more fit you?

21 Day Fix – Day 18

I admit, today was a day I had a moment or two of “I don’t want to workout today”. My allergies are in full swing and breathing is interesting. I have to keep the Kleenex handy. I didn’t not do my workout though. I went down to get it done. I had to pause a few minutes in to blow my nose, but after those first few minutes, I was breathing easier through my nose than I had in days. Amazing what a good workout can do for a person! 🙂

Another round of Pilates Fix is in the books. I am really starting to enjoy this one. I take back the “it’s too slow” comment from my first week. It’s just the right pace for the work being done. It is focusing on breathing with the movements, and that is definitely an important thing. I think by focusing on my breathing I am letting my body do what it needs to and not trying to force it. Another reason to like and enjoy the workout!

I’ve also done well with eating clean today and drinking plenty of water. I’ve had at least 70 oz of water so far today. And still going strong. Water is perhaps the best thing we can drink because it hydrates and replenishes the fluids we sweat out. It is also about the only thing I really drink. Fruit juices tend to be too sweet, soda just leaves me feeling horrid, and I’ve never liked coffee. I will drink herbal tea every now and then, though. So I suppose there is that. 🙂

Have you gotten out there and gotten active yet today? What was your favorite healthy/clean eating meal of the day? Today? Mine was dinner – small steak with roasted asparagus and homemade mashed potatoes. Yumm!

21 Day Fix – Day 17

Leg day. A day many have a love-hate relationship with. I love it because it works the largest muscle group and the biggest kicker for our metabolism. Because our legs are our biggest muscle group they have the greatest potential to burn more fat and calories throughout the day after working them.

I definitely worked my legs and booty today. I kept up with my progress and stuck with the 10 lb weights. Oh my goodness I was feeling it! I was dripping sweat half way through. I swear when I was done I had to crawl up the stairs and and left a line of sweat behind me. 🙂 It was a great workout.

Have you gotten out there and gotten active today? Have you worked on nutrition like I mentioned yesterday? Want to know what mine has been today? I started with a Shakeology, had a Fiber One Protein Bar for my first snack, a salad with peppers, tomatoes and chicken (left over from the fajitas I made Monday), second snack was grapes and a cheese stick, and dinner will be chicken thighs with corn and white fiber pasta. Speaking of, time to go take care of that.

Get out there, get active and clean up that eating! You can do it! 🙂

21 Day Fix – Day 16

Today my workout was Upper Fix. Oh boy, I’m feeling it now. I pushed myself. Really pushed. I even moved up to stick with 10 lbs for my heavy weight and 7 lbs for my light weight. And I kept it throughout, I didn’t have to put them down and stop. Oh my goodness it was such a challenge. But a good challenge. Such a good challenge! Oh so very good!

I am very happy that I have so far this week made my mark with moving up to the light and heavy weights goals. It feels great. Even when it challenged me. Even when I thought I couldn’t push any farther. I didn’t give up. I didn’t quit. I pushed. I kept going. I got it done.

Speaking of getting it done, something I haven’t mentioned much, only really alluded to… Nutrition. Nutrition is so very important. You can work out all day long, but dangit if you eat CRAP all day, you’re just going to sabotage all that hard work. I’m not saying don’t eat. You HAVE to eat to fuel your body and your workouts. BUT, and here’s the thing. You have to eat healthy, good for you, nutrition RICH foods. A treat now and then won’t kill your nutrition, it won’t derail you. But it can take down your hard work if you continue to treat and cheat and eat crap. And you know what? When you cut the crap out of your diet, when you do cheat… It doesn’t taste nearly as good as it once did. Try it. Try a day of clean eating, then a week, then two weeks, then three. I bet your body will thank you for it. Your health will thank you for it. And YOU will thank you for it!

So, have you gotten up and gotten active for at least 30 minutes today? No excuses. get up, get out there and do SOMETHING! Take the kids or the dog for a walk. Get up and dance to your favorite songs. What about your nutrition? Are you ready to start eating to fuel your body instead of sabotaging it? You can do it! I know you can. I’m here to support you. And I’ll help you get it if you want, just ask me how!

21 Day Fix Day 14

Two weeks. Has it really been a full 2 weeks since I started 21 Day Fix? Yes and no. Yes on the workout portion, no for the eating plan. I really am enjoying the program, the workouts and the eating plan. They work so very well together, and the eating plan isn’t too terribly hard once you get used to it. Portion control. Lots and lots of portion control and shopping the perimeter of the store, with little to no processed foods in the diet. It’s a good plan. It’s a good way to approach meals and planning. it just takes adjustment and time. And that’s the crux of 21 Day Fix. It takes 21 days to make (or break) a habit, to create a consistent routine, and wire it into your brain. The eating plan is at 21 days for me, the workouts will be soon.

Well, okay the working out has been a routine. I’ve not missed many workouts in the last several months. But THESE routines will be at 21 days next week. I am still debating on restarting the workouts/continuing them after next Sunday or moving on to the 21 Day Fix Extreme. I’m leaning more to another round of 21 Day Fix then Extreme. We shall see.

Today’s workout, though. That’s what my post is supposed to be about isn’t it? Today’s workout was Yoga Fix. Like last week I managed chaturanga on my toes. Well, the making it to the floor bit, knees may have hit to help me lift myself back up into upward dog. It is a work in progress. All fitness and flexibility is. The fact that I am seeing the progress and know I am making it and getting stronger means the workouts are working and that makes me one happy, fit mama!

Did you get out there today and get active? Did you eat healthy? What are your plans for tomorrow? Mine is healthy eating, play with the kids and get stuff done around the house. Oh yes, and 21 Day Fix – Complete Cardio Fix. That one shall be fun I’m sure! 🙂

21 Day Fix Day 13

Another day, another workout. Today was Dirty 30. Funny name, I know, but it really is a good one. It works the whole body, but really gives a good focus on weights and the arms. My arms are already starting to let me know I worked them. I can feel the good sore starting to set in. Lifting will definitely be interesting tomorrow, and probably even later tonight.

I am seeing increases in strength and even reps on exercises. I was able to up my heavy weights to 8 lbs. They are still challenging in some spots, but not entirely in others so I will definitely push myself to try the 10 lbs next week. I do know that the 5 lb weights for the light weights has gotten too light, so 7 lbs will be my light weight next week. I love that little tidbit!

I love that I am seeing progress. In just 2 weeks. I am seeing more definition all over, I am seeing tone. I am seeing strength gains. It is a wonderful thing. Oh so very wonderful. Yes, the program is winning me over. I was a doubter before I started and the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Or, in this case, the progress and the change I am seeing.

What are you doing to get yourself up and out there? What are you working to change today? How are you pushing yourself? Are you eating clean today? Have you gotten at least 30 active minutes in yet? Get out there and enjoy your Saturday. And do something to find that health and happiness for YOU!

21 Day Fix Day 12

Good morning my dears. Today starts Day 12 of the 21 Day Fix. I started the day with a Vegan Chocolate Shakeology with half of a banana and a tablespoon of Nutella. Why add the Nutella for extra chocolate? Why not use peanut butter? Because MY jar of peanut butter has nuts and they just don’t blend up very well. And hubby’s smooth/creamy peanut butter has honey. That’s just too sweet for me, so I opt for the Nutella for a little extra chocolate kick. 🙂 When it’s the same calories and sugar content as the PB, why not treat with hazelnuts instead of peanuts!

My workout this morning consisted of Cardio Fix. No weights today. I admit, I was a little frowny faced at that one. I love the weighted exercises. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t push and didn’t get a good burn or workout. I was drenched in sweat half way through, and that was all just body weight and cardio kicking up the heat and heart rate. It was a good workout. And the bonus round didn’t kick my butt quite as much this week. Yay! Loving the successes and strength, the GAINS I’m seeing with just a week of work! (Even with a day off for being sick!)

Overall, so far I am enjoying the program much more than I thought I would. I swore I bought it because my Hubby expressed an interest. He saw an add for it and asked. So I looked into it and told him we’d get it when we got our tax refund. As soon as it hit, we ordered it and 21 Day Fix Extreme, which may or may not be my next mountain to climb. I’m honestly not sure. I may do another round of 21 Day Fix first, just for even more success and strength before going Extreme.

All in all, while I had reservations at the start, Autumn and the workouts have won me over. I really am enjoying them. As with Combat (which was another program I bought for him that has become mine) I am seeing gains and success and loving it. Funny how you get something for someone else and it becomes something for you isn’t it? That’s the joy of fitness and workouts. You try something and sometimes it becomes that thing that works for you. The joys of trial and error, open minds, and listening to your mind, your heart, your body, and the Universe. Trust and balance. What a wonderful combination!

Have you gotten out there and gotten your 30 minutes of active movement done today? Are you getting in the healthy eating and cleaning up the nutrition? What are you doing for YOU today?
